Zone alarm (Free) - This is a free program but don't let that fool you. It is easily one of the best firewall's out there. Can be quite tough to get going with but thats because it is very secure.
Kaspersky's Anti virus - I personally think it's one of the best anti virus programs on the market. You can download a 30 day Demo here. (Just click any of the servers once there)
Spybot (Free) - If you only have one Anti spyware product on your computer have this and it's free.
Ad-Aware (Free) - A brilliant free program for removing spyware. Run this on a regular basis to keep your computer spyware free. I also advise using more than one anti spyware program.
Windows Defender - Microsofts spyware removal and blocking software and it's free. (If you have a genuine version of Windows.
Open Office (Free) - Sick of paying for expensive office software then Open office is the answer as it is FREE and brilliant. More compatible with the office favorite than the office favorite is.
Windows Update- Click this to update your version of windows. On the right is an option to included office updates. I also suggest setting your computer to receive updates automatically through control panel > Automatic updates. DO NOT IGNORE DOING THIS!!
PDF Creator (Free) - A free program for creating PDF files. Never used it personally but it got 5 stars in a magazine I read.

Norton's Removal tool- Having problems uninstalling Norton's software here is a link to a tool for removing it. (Best thing for it!)
Rocket Dock (Free)- Fantastic little program give you a Mac type toolbar which is totally customizable.
Opera (Free)- The best web browser on the market and it's FREE. Tab browsing higher level of security much better than the windows built in browser. Tip: Keep Explorer set as your default browser. So say no when you open opera and it asks you to set it as default you need Explorer for updates ect. Also some sites will only work with Explorer.
Firefox (Free)- Thefastest web browser on the market and it's FREE. Tab browsing higher level of security again much better than the windows built in browser. Thunderbird (Free)- A very good free alternative to Outlook works very similar. Only hang up is it is extremely hard to move over to Outlook at a later date as you can't export emails but it can be done.
O&O Defragment - If your computer is running a bit sluggish or looses files it probably needs defragmented. Windows has one built in under accessories but it is not brilliant. If you want the best that will actually make a difference to the speed of your computer get O&O Defragmenter. It costs about £25 but is brilliant. (You can get a 30 day demo)
Acronis true Image - This one cost money but it is a must have as far as I am concerned. It is for backing up your operating system as well as backing up your valuable documents. You will require a separate drive to backup to. (This can be done by partitioning or buying another drive). Or save to disk or usb backup device.
GRC - A very informative site regarding security. Also test the security of your network or computer using the built in software.
